eSIM-Compatible Android Phones in Japan: Pixel, Galaxy and More (October 2026)

An Android phone’s brand alone does not tell you whether it supports eSIM. Even within Google Pixel, Galaxy, AQUOS or Xperia, SIM specifications can differ by model, model number and sales region.

Find your model in the lists below, then check the device settings and seller’s specifications. Overseas and used devices may differ from Japan-market versions even when their product names match.

Before you start: eSIM capability and tested compatibility are different

This article summarizes eSIM capabilities published by manufacturers and sellers. It does not mean every listed model has been tested with Almond eSIM.

Usability also depends on carrier locks, supported frequency bands, the OS, apps and the chosen eSIM service. A model missing from this list is not necessarily incompatible; check the SIM section of its official specifications.

Google Pixel phones with eSIM support

For Japan-market Google Pixel phones, Pixel 4 and later are a useful starting point for checking eSIM support. Pixel 3 / 3a specifications vary by region; do not apply overseas compatibility information directly to Japanese versions.

Physical SIM support on US and other versions may differ from Japanese versions. The Pixel generation alone does not establish whether it accepts a physical SIM or supports two active eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy phones with eSIM support

Samsung Japan lists the following main compatible smartphones. Since imported Galaxy phones are common, check both the purchase country and model number.

The usual path is Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Labels can vary by model, software and system language. This list does not apply automatically to every overseas version with the same name.

SHARP AQUOS phones with eSIM support

SIM configurations can differ between sellers even within the same AQUOS series. For older sense and wish phones in particular, do not infer support from a similar name. Check the SH-prefixed model number and the specifications for the version sold by docomo, au, SoftBank or another seller.

Sony Xperia phones with eSIM support

Xperia SIM configurations can differ between unlocked retail, carrier and overseas versions. Check the complete model number, including prefixes such as XQ, SO or SOG. “Xperia 1” or “Xperia 10” alone is not enough.

OPPO phones with eSIM support

Official specifications for Japan-market Reno15 A, Reno16 5G and Find X9 models include eSIM. This does not mean every OPPO phone supports it. Do not apply overseas Reno or Find compatibility details to a different Japanese model.

Some models make the second physical SIM, eSIM or microSD slot mutually exclusive. Check the individual model’s specifications to see which combinations work with your current SIM or memory card.

eSIM support on Xiaomi and Redmi phones

Xiaomi’s Japanese specifications list combinations such as nanoSIM + eSIM or eSIM + eSIM under Network and Connectivity or a similar heading. Distinguish mainland China, global and Japan-market versions.

Note, Pro and 5G can identify different Redmi models. Do not classify the entire Redmi range as compatible or incompatible. Use the full product name and model number to check official specifications; an overseas list alone cannot confirm support on Japanese versions.

Motorola phones with eSIM support

The Japanese official store lists nanoSIM and eSIM support for these models. Not every moto g, edge or razr phone has the same SIM configuration. Include suffixes such as j, s and y when looking up a device.

arrows, Kyocera, ZTE/nubia and Rakuten-branded phones

arrows Alpha supports configurations including nanoSIM + eSIM and eSIM + eSIM. Rakuten Hand 5G is eSIM-only and does not accept physical SIM cards.

Support is not universal across a manufacturer’s business phones, children’s phones and older devices. For unlisted models, check the manufacturer’s or original carrier’s specification page.

Three steps to check eSIM support on Android

1. Find the full product name and model number

Open Settings and look for About phone or Device information to find the product name and model number. Do not rely on an online listing’s title or the phone’s appearance; compare the model number with official specifications.

2. Look for an Add eSIM menu or EID

On Pixel, the usual path is Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. On Galaxy, use Settings → Connections → SIM manager. Other brands may use Mobile network or SIM cards & mobile networks. Labels depend on system language and software version.

Options such as Add eSIM or Download a SIM, or an EID in device information, are useful clues. An EID alone does not guarantee service compatibility. If the menu is missing, also check the OS, sales region and device-management settings.

3. Check the eSIM provider’s requirements

Even if the manufacturer confirms eSIM support, check compatibility with the specific service. Review carrier locks, required frequency bands, whether the plan is data-only and the app’s OS requirements.

Adding an eSIM while keeping your main line

• Check whether your current line uses a physical SIM or eSIM, and whether both lines can stay active after adding the new one.
• Dual-SIM support does not necessarily mean two eSIMs can be active together.
• Choose the appropriate line for calls, SMS and mobile data.
• Use a stable internet connection, such as Wi-Fi, to install the eSIM.
• Do not delete an installed eSIM without checking with the provider.

Add a data eSIM when you need extra data in Japan

With a phone that supports the required dual-SIM setup, you can keep your existing number and use a separate eSIM for data. This can be useful when you run short of data near the end of the month or need a small top-up while out.

Frequently asked questions

Does an unlocked Android phone always support eSIM?

No. Unlocked refers to carrier-lock status, not eSIM hardware. Check eSIM support separately in the official specifications.

Are overseas Galaxy or Xiaomi phones the same as Japanese versions?

SIM configurations, frequency bands and software may differ even with the same product name. Check the purchase region and model number, then confirm requirements with both the manufacturer and service provider.

Is an Android phone incompatible if it is not listed?

Not necessarily. This page lists selected models used in Japan. Look for eSIM in the SIM section of the official specifications. If unclear, contact the manufacturer with the model number.

What if setup succeeds but mobile data does not work?

Check the selected data SIM, activation conditions, data roaming on the Almond eSIM line and, if needed, APN settings. Configure the intended line rather than automatically enabling roaming on your main line as well.
